Show: December 20, 2009:
Book: The Sugarless Plum
Interview: Zippora Karz, ballet dancer
It’s the season of the Nutcracker ballet including that famous role of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
Well, it's hard enough to be a star ballerina when you’re healthy. The rehearsals are strenuous, and it takes enormous strength and stamina to make it all look so easy and graceful.
When Zippora Karz was a young star in the New York City Ballet, she danced the Sugar Plum Fairy role dozens of times.
Then, at age 21, she developed diabetes. It almost ended her career.
Her new book, The Sugarless Plum, describes how she learned to manage diabetes in such an unforgiving career. Zippora Karz joins us by phone from New York.
Zippora Karz was a soloist ballerina with the New York City Ballet for 16 years. She now teaches ballet for the George Balanchine Trust.
